Auf dem Weg in die Antikensammlung im Museum Kurhaus Kleve begegnet mensch der Büste des Großfürst Prinz Moritz zu Nassau-Siegen welcher mit Alabasteraugen auf uns herabblickt. Meisterhaft geschaffen zeugt dieses Abbild vom Anspruch und der Macht des Großfürsten. Meine letzte Begegnung mit ihm war von dem Wunsch geführt sein Konterfei mit dem Gesicht zur Wand zu platzieren : denn in Wirklichkeit sollte ein Mann mit seiner Vergangenheit sich zutiefst schämen. Als Generalgouverneur der Besitzungen der Niederländischen Westindien-Kompanie in Niederländisch-Brasilien in den Jahren 1636 bis 1644 war der Großfürst als williger Organisator für die Ausbeutung , Leid und Tod von geschätzt 23.000 Menschenleben verantwortlich. Natürlich war er als Kind seiner Zeit in seinem Tun verhaftet aber die Rückschau auf sein Werk betrachtet zu oft das visionäre Werk für Kleve – und vergisst zu oft daß dieser Mann ein Opportunist & Schinder war. Freilich ist es einigen Menschen schon aufgefallen daß in einer modernen Betrachtung der Name des Großfürsten nicht mehr den Leumund hat um sich damit zu schmücken. So wurde am 26.10.2023 (*1) der Kulturpreis der Stadt Kleve namentlich eingedampft.
Aus den Sitzungsprotokollen des Stadtrats geht auch hervor daß „im Gegenteil eine weitere Auseinandersetzung und Diskussion wünschenswert“ ist.
Mit dem Projekt „Strahlungsgröße“ (*2)
kann die gewünschte Diskussion großzügig angestoßen werden.
So wie alle kolonialen Verbrechen gute Ideen benötigen um, jenseits des gewollten Vergessens, der Geschichtsschreibung das Wort Verantwortung hinzu zu fügen.
Die Politik des Kreises Kleve habe ich Anfang November über mein Ansinnen informiert. Auf postalischem Weg wurde das Kulturbüro im Kreishaus bedacht, die demokratischen Fraktionen habe ich per E-Mail informiert.
Auf meine E-Mail erhielt ich nur von Frau Schacky/Grüne eine Antwort mit dem Hinweis daß diese Themen nicht im Kreistag verhandelt werden.
Mitte November erhielt ich eine persönliche Antwort des Landrats Gerwers der meine Idee zwar wertschätzte aber auf das Fehlen eines Etats für ein solches Vorhaben und eine fehlende Zuständigkeit hinwies. Erfreut über diese persönliche Reaktion lud ich ihn ein ganz informell über das Projekt zu sprechen und dabei ein Modell in Augenschein zu nehmen. Das Ausbleiben einer Antwort interpretiere ich als „Nein, Danke“
Anfang Februar 2026 verfasste ich ein ähnliches Schreiben an den Kulturausschuss der Stadt Kleve. Eine angemessene Reaktion blieb aus.
Zuvor verfasste Emails an den Bürgermeister der Stadt Kleve blieben ohne Rückmeldung.
Die Öffentlichkeit ist ein zentraler Aspekt im Projekt „Strahlungsgröße“ denn nur wenn die MitbürgerInnen über das menschenfeindliche Außmaß des Großfürsten wissen kann eine zukünftige Geschichtsverbrämung verhindert werden. Je niederschwelliger diese Erkenntnisse vermittelt werden um so größer die Empfängergruppe – kreatives Tun ist dafür erfahrungsgemäß ein probates Werkzeug.
Ob die öffentliche Hand finanzielle Mittel für das Projekt zur Verfügung stellt darf kein Ausschlusskriterium zur Umsetzung darstellen. Der finanzielle Aufwand für Phase 1 ist schätzungsweise klein und dürfte sich leicht realisieren lassen. Für die Realisation von Phase 2 werden allerdings mehrstellige Beträge aufgerufen, welche aber auch mittels eines Crowdfunding gesammelt werden können.
Sollte Inhalt & Absicht nicht in der Breite getragen werden, dann dürfte ein Crowdfunding scheitern, die Politik bedeckt sich weiterhin mit Schweigen und unser Prinz schaut unschuldig auf die Besucher im Museum Kurhaus.

On the way to the collection of antiquities in the Museum Kurhaus Kleve, man encounters the bust of Prinz Moritz to Nassau , which looks down on us with alabaster eyes. Masterfully created, this image testifies to the claim and power of the Grand Duke. My last encounter with him was led by the desire to place his counterfeit with his face to the wall : because in reality a man with his past should be deeply ashamed. As Governor-General of the possessions of the Dutch West India Company in Dutch Brazil in the years 1636 to 1644, the Grand Duke was responsible as a willing organizer for the exploitation, suffering and death of an estimated 23,000 lives. Of course, as a child of his time, he was dedicated in his work, but the review of his work too often was the visionary work for Kleve – and too often forgets that this man was an opportunist . Of course, some people have already noticed that in a modern contemplation the name of the Grand Duke no longer has the light to adorn himself with it. Thus, on 26.10.2023 (*1) the cultural prize of the city of Kleve was evaporated by name.
The notes of the City Council also show that “on the contrary, a further discussion is desirable”.
With the project “Strahlungsgröße” (*2)
the desired discussion can be generously initiated .

Just as all colonial crimes need good ideas to add the word responsibility to historiography, beyond the intentional forgetfulness.
I informed the politics of the district of Kleve at the beginning of November about my intention. In a postal way, the cultural office in the district hall was considered, the democratic factions I have informed by e-mail.
I received only a reply from Mrs Schacky/Grüne to my e-mail, indicating that these issues are not being negotiated in the district council.
In mid-November, I received a personal response from the district councillor Gerwers, who appreciated my idea, but pointed to the lack of a budget for such a project and a lack of competence. Delighted about this personal reaction, I invited him to talk about the project in an informal way and to take a look at a model. I interpret the absence of a response as “no, thank you”
At the beginning of February 2026, I wrote a similar letter to the Culture Committee of the City of Kleve. An appropriate reaction was not possible.
Previously written emails to the mayor of the city of Kleve were without feedback.
The public is a central aspect of the project “Strahlungsgröße” because only if the fellow citizens know about the misanthropic extent of the Grand Prince can a future history excretion be prevented. The lower-threshold these findings are conveyed the greater the recipient group – creative action is a proven tool for this.
Whether the public sector provides financial resources for the project must not constitute an exclusion criterion for implementation. The financial outlay for Phase 1 is estimated to be small and should be easy to realize. For the realization of phase 2, however, multi-digit amounts are called, which can also be collected by means of a crowdfunding.
However, the decisive factor for the realization of the project “Strahlungsgröße” is the approval & understanding in the population.
If content & intention are not carried in the width then a crowdfunding should fail, the politics cover themselves with silence and our prince continues to look quite innocently at the visitors in the Museum Kurhaus.
